Default d/c with my laptop help techies pls!

Hey guys!

Whenever I wirelessly connect to my router or almost any router for that matter, I usually end up getting disconnected and having to restart my laptop to get the connection again. I'm running Windows Vista and do u guys think its a vista problem or a driver problem? I think my drivers are usually updated since the HP driver update thing usually updates it for me. Its really irritating especially when i'm in school/mall/friend's house. Can u help pls?

We need to know what router your friend has, what laptop you have including specs, and how far the laptop is from the router. This will allow us to help you.

How do you connect? Just click connect to, select the network and click connect?

Try deleting all wireless profiles on your system (start -> Network -> Network & sharing Center -> Manage Wireless Networks -> select the wireless network, click remove) ..

And then manually creating the wireless profile again. So click start -> connect to -> Setup a connection or Network -> manually connect to a wireless network -> input the ssid (network name), security type(ie wep/wep or wpa-psk/tkip, etc) and the passphrase/security-key ..click the box that says "start this connection automatically" .. -> next -> connect to.

What you can also do is try the following:

1. delete all wireless profiles
2. do winsock reset
3. do int ip reset
4. disable UAC
5 restart comp
6. manually configure wireless profile.

To do winsock & int ip reset :

1. click start
2. in the "start search" box type: cmd , then press enter.. this should open up a black dosbox/prompt
3. In this box type:

netsh winsock reset (press enter)
netsh int ip reset (press reset)

You do need to reboot the comp after doing these commands.

Also check to see if your wireless internet protocol v4 is set to "Obtain" ip & dns automatically and not trying to configure a manual ip.

"required elevation" = UAC is enabled & doesn't want to play ball. You will need to disable it..

start -> "user" in start search -> User Accounts -> "Turn User Access control On/Off" -> untick box -> ok -> restart computer

once UAC is off, you'll be able to do cmd and the winsock & int ip reset's..

Have you tried changing the wireless channel? you might be getting interference on the frequency that the wireless is set to.. you should have around 11 channels to choose from, log into the modem/router and change the wireless channel.. try channels 3, 5, 7 & 9...

A poor connection. If you have a cheap router or reciever and they are too far away from each other, or their are too many other networks interferring with your network.

Could be a number of reason's.. (some already pointed out), some possibilities:

- crappy router/modem
- crappy network adapter
- bad drivers for network adapter
- software interfering (ie uac, firewalls, etc)
- incorrectly configured wireless on modem and/or pc
- interference from other wireless devices (ie cordless phones, mobile phones, cordless keyboards/mice, other wireless networks, other wireless devices such as bluetooth, etc)
